Plan the Design and Construction of Different Types of Cabinets

Cabinet making or cabinetry involves making cupboards or cases for storing or displaying items. Besides cupboards that are fitted to walls of kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, etc. cabinet making also includes free-standing cabinets such as display cabinets or those anchored to walls such as medicine or vanity cabinets.

Although cabinets can be made from metal and other materials, the focus of this course is wooden cabinetry which may be constructed from solid timbers or composite boards.

Cabinet Making or Carpentry?

Since this course is chiefly about making wooden cabinets, some may link this to carpentry. The main distinction is that cabinet making is a specialised branch of carpentry. Cabinet making is often about design and fine details of furniture or planning a project in small space. Whereas carpenters have skills used on larger projects or in construction. Carpenters usually don't design or choose finishes or hardware.

Learn how to apply skills in the design and construction of different types of cabinets.

  • Different types of cabinet making tools and machines

  • Option B: Restoring or Altering a Cabinet
Alternative project for those unable to make a cabinet:
Students must restore a cabinet or make significant alterations to a cabinet. The cabinet selected for restoration or modification can be any sort of cabinet that the student has access to.

CABINET MAKING SKILLS HAVE A WIDE APPLICATION

Whilst the focus of this course is wooden cabinets which may be constructed from solid timbers or composite boards, cabinets are sometimes made from other materials. For instance, metals are often used for map drawers or filing cabinets. Stainless steel is used for food grade cabinets or medical storage units. Since it is chiefly about making wooden cabinets, cabinet making is like carpentry. The main distinction is that cabinet making is a specialised branch of carpentry. Carpenters may be involved in making all sorts of things whereas cabinet makers focus on cupboards.

Like the materials involved in construction, the exteriors of cabinets can also be variable. For example, benchtops may be added to kitchen cabinets to seal the top of the cabinet using a range of materials like granite, marble, or particle board coated in melamine or Formica. Older style washing cabinets have tiled tops, and decorative veneers may be a feature of free-standing cabinets.

Cabinets may have internal drawers or shelves and they may have doors or be open plan. The level of skill needed for cabinetry depends on lots of different variables such as the type of structure being made, the joints used, the location for fitted cabinets, the complexity of the interior and exterior, and other factors.
