Learn how Homes, Workplaces and other Buildings can Impact Human Health
Sick building syndrome? You have probably heard of this and how buildings and workplaces can contribute to a person's physical and mental ill health.
Humans spend a significant proportion of their lives inside buildings whether at home or at work. However, the way many buildings have been constructed can have serious health consequences for those inside.
In many ways, buildings can have passive effects on human health such as via water pipes, the use of hazardous materials in construction, poor layout and lighting, acoustic effects, radioactivity, inadequate ventilation, excessive moisture, and moulds.
Beneficial design attempts to reduce or eliminate the negative impact of building design and construction on the health of its occupants.
Students who take this course will learn to describe and explain the impact of building construction characteristics upon human health.
They can then use this knowledge to recommend innovations in building design in order to improve habitability of buildings.
Course Code: BSS200

Toxic materials, electromagnetic radiation and even the psychological impact of a building's design can contribute toward ill health.
If buildings are designed and built properly though, in full knowledge of environmental impacts; choices can be made to create internal environments that help rather than hinder human wellbeing.
